M. TODD BONIN, DDS
Post-Operative Care After Dental Extractions

You have just had a form of minor surgery. The extraction site starts to heal from the bottom up. There is a clot that forms and must stay in place for proper healing.

1. Smoking and drinking through straw forms a “suction” inside the mouth which can dislodge the clot. Carbonated drinks can "bubble" the clot out of the healing socket. These  should be avoided for 24 hours.

2. Do not do any vigorous rinsing for 24 hours.

3. Start rinsing with warm salt water (1 teaspoon to 8 oz. water) 2 to 3 times a day. This flushes away any food particles which may be lodged around the extraction site and aids in the healing process.

4. You may notice a little bleeding or oozing. This is quite normal. There is usually a lot of saliva and very little blood. Keep the gauze we supplied you with in place for at least 2 hours after the extraction. Speak as little as possible.

5. Drink plenty of fluids including juices, Gatorade, and water. Avoid carbonated beverages!

6. Complications to look for include: fever, severe pain, abnormal clotting and unusual swelling. Aspirin or Tylenol should take care of any discomfort you might experience. A prescription for pain medication may have been provided for you. At your discretion, have it filled and take it only as prescribed. Antibiotics are NOT routinely prescribed unless prior infection, swelling, fever, and/or malaise are present.
